Trader spotlight: Pauline Sylvia Designs

Read on to find out about a mother and daughter team making and selling gorgeous gemstone jewellery and trading with us for the first time on April 12th 2015.

Who are you?

We are Pauline Sylvia Designs – a mother and daughter team who have been working together for 18 months. Mum (Pauline Sylvia) is the designer and I (Lisa) look after the business side, running the stall and marketing/social media.

What do you make?

Genuine gemstone jewellery – bracelets, necklaces and earrings. They are beautiful, feminine, timeless and classic pieces of jewellery using only genuine gemstones and freshwater pearls.

What inspires the designs?

The gemstones are the starting point for every piece. We have a massive, constantly growing, selection of genuine gemstones and semi-precious stones from all over the world and are completely fascinated by their natural beauty.  It’s amazing to think that something so stunning has been created through various conditions in the earth and the end result is a unique and precious gemstone. Some of the stones like Labradorite, Moonstone and Opal have some stunning optical properties and are a joy to work with.

Our visitors can meet you on April 12th – but where else can they find you?

Lots of our customers buy directly from us through our Facebook page We post all our new pieces on here and have albums of pieces made and ready for delivery.  We also hold jewellery parties which are a lovely social able evening where we visit your house and set up our jewellery display, there is no hard sell or pressure to buy and customers can browse and try on at their leisure whilst enjoying a glass of wine and a chat. The hostess receives a commission from sales on the night to spend on jewellery and a free gift for kindly agreeing to host us.

Tell us about your best-sellers

Our 925 Sterling Silver and genuine Pearl bracelet has been the best seller and always received great feedback and comments (pictured below).

The quickest selling piece is our black Agate bracelet, we made 3 of these and within 15 minutes of posting a picture on our Facebook page had sold them all (see picture attached from the post). Amethyst is the most popular gemstone, its easily recognisable and  its lovely lilac and purple colour tones a favourite with our customers. Prices start at £5 for Silver or Gold Plated earrings and bracelets, up to £60 for a genuine pearl necklace using Gold Vermeil.

Meet a TV star on Sunday!

Our resident graffiti artist and spraypainter, Luke Hollingsworth now gets recognised in Tescos ever since he made it to the final of Channel 4’s Shed of the Year

Syd from The Stencil Shed. Friendly and famous.
Luke, aka Syd from The Stencil Shed. Friendly and famous. Spot the award in the centre, bottom row.

Earlier this year Luke Hollingsworth, aka Syd from The Stencil Shed achieved the accolade of runner-up in Channel 4’s “Amazing Spaces/Shed of the Year” with his shed-based studio. He came second (he says he was “robbed”) but did get to meet presenter George Clark as well as appearing on TV. Watch his starring appearance below.

These days Syd is something of a local hero, having appeared in the numerous newspaper articles, as well as being recognised when he’s out and about. On life since the show he says: “It’s all been a bit of a whirlwind. Weirdest moment was being asked for an autograph the day after the final while shopping in Tesco!”

Syd has been with us for over a year and says “I’m pleased to be a regular attendee at the Bath Artisan Market selling my artistic skills all executed in my shed. I can remember when I first applied for a pitch that a selling point on the blurb was ‘maybe you’ll find the next Banksy’ at the market. Well…. I’m not Banksy but I’m very proud to be nationally known as ‘The Stencil Shed’.

Sunday August 10th – Free Folk Music Sunday with the Bath Folk Festival!

Our August market is just as exciting, especially because we have a whole day full of free live music!

Last year’s collaboration between the market and festival was a great success and drew large crowds who were especially entertained by youthful ceilidh band Threepenny Bit and the barn-storming and expansive ARDS CCE from Ireland (there are lots of them!). We’re therefore extremely happy to announce that both acts are returning this year. We’re also very excited about our headline act, is Owl in the Sun, a West Country 6 piece who inhabit a musical world of Americana, gypsy jazz and contemporary folk.

Alongside the free live acts are over 60 stalls selling the best of Bath’s art, vintage and designer-maker wares, plus local food producers, excellent coffee and delicious hot food.
