Meet the stallholders #6: Beautiful Bath by Kate McDonnell

Kate McDonnell is the owner of ‘Beautiful Bath’ who will be joining us on Sunday August 11th at our Bath Folk Festival Special. Here, Kate tells us a little more about how the business began and about her eye-catching designs.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your work.

I was first inspired by my husband Gideon Kibblewhite whilst he writing the second edition of ‘The Naked Guide to Bath’ and was coming out with wonderful quotes about the city as he worked. I was one of the photographers for the book and we decided to write ‘Beautiful Bath: A souvenir in words and images’ together. I designed it and took the photographs and he collated the quotes and wrote the introduction.

I’ve lived in and near Bath for just over thirty years, currently on the northern slopes with an amazing panoramic view of the whole of the centre of town and the Abbey and love the architecture and landscape. I’ve created ‘The Bath Typographic’ map inspired by the street names and the secret names the locals call things. One of my favorites is Bog Island.

I’ve recently bought a badge machine and am busily designing and making funny Bath badges. ‘Gurt Lush’ is the most popular closely followed by a rather arrogant seagull! I’m thrilled to have recently sold 18 designs to the Bath Tourist Information Centre.

What are you looking forward to most at Bath Artisan Market?

Every time I do a market people come up with great ideas for badges, so I’m looking forward to that. As this is my second market, I’m excited to meet new customers and get to know my fellow stallholders.
