On the eve of National Gardening Week (April 14th-21st), Bath in Bloom will join the market for a second year at Green Park Station to promote both their work and the importance that gardening plays in our lives. To mark the occasion, Bath in Bloom will enable everyone to plant a sunflower for free – seeds, compost, pots and know-how all supplied. Their pitch will be outside the Green Park Bike Station on the market square.

Barry Cruse MBE, Chairman of the Bath in Bloom committee says “I am really looking forward to the April Bath Artisan Market because it will give Bath in Bloom the opportunity to meet people and encourage them to plant sunflower seeds, which will go some way towards making Bath a golden city this year”.

The sunflower seed planting project is part of a national “Growing for Gold” theme, designed to celebrate 50 years of community gardening campaign, Britain in Bloom, that’s run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). It’s hoped that half a million sunflower seeds will be sown across Britain.

RHS Community Horticulture Manager, Stephanie Eynon, adds: “These gorgeous and uplifting plants have been known to grow an astonishing 20ft high, which reflects the sort of spirit and drive we associate with RHS Britain in Bloom volunteers.

We’re providing the seeds as a big ‘thank you’ to all the industrious and passionate people who work year-round to make the UK clean, green and beautiful. It is also a chance to do something big for the environment. As well as being symbolic of RHS Britain in Bloom’s 50th year, these glorious fields of gold will provide vital food for pollinators this summer.”

In addition to the sunflower planting, Bath in Bloom – who won the first ever Britain in Bloom competition in 1964 and who are finalists this year – will be joined by other gardening related stalls including the Bath WI (who have adopted a plot in Bath’s Botanical Gardens in which to grow edibles), Bath Beekeepers (who are running a children’s candle-making stall and will have an observational hive of live bees) and Bath Flowers owned by Saffron Dodds-Smith who specializes in English flowers. The award-winning Weston Village Gardening Club will also be there – last year their 300 –strong group received an Outstanding Award in the “It’s Your Neighbourbood” awards. These stalls will be pitched alongside the Bath Artisan Market’s new kids’ mini-market with vintage and handmade stalls for children, craft workshops from Twinklerose and the Happy Inkers plus a family-friendly café area with room for buggies and books for children to read while parents have a cuppa.

Of course the rest of the market will be just as lively as ever and all decorated with as many flowers as traders can find in one way or another as they did in 2013, creating a beautiful, vibrant atmosphere. The Bath Artisan Market is a year old now and has over 70 local and original food, handmade, art and vintage stalls, flying the flag for creativity in and around Bath. We run on the second Sunday of every month between 10am-4pm and have plenty to eat, see, shop and do for all ages.

10am-4pm on Sunday April 13th at Green Park Station, Bath. Free entry, 90 minutes free parking and cash points on-site. For more information about how to find us click here.

Help Bath Fine Art Students raise money for their London show!

Each month we give away a free pitch to a student enterprise and on Sunday April 13th we are welcoming back Bath Fine Art students Elizabeth, Ella, Abi, Amy and Charlotte. They first joined us as full paying traders (ok we did give them a student discount) in March 2014 because the student stall had been taken by the innovative Rem Cor. However, the fine art students asked to come back for our Bath in Bloom special because they are raising money for their London exhibition in July, so we’ve given them the pitch for free.

They are all third year students at Bath Spa School of Art and Design and say that when they’re not studying, they love going to exhibition private views both at 44AD and other exhibitions, having a glass of wine and talking about art, as well as walking around the city and shopping at independent boutiques and businesses, markets, galleries and special events.
Bath Art Students - meet them April 13th
Each student is passionate about making a living from their creativity, which we want to support. Explains Elizabeth Levett, who booked the stall: “Most of us want to be artists or to pursue a career in the art industry in another form, whether it’s teaching it, writing about it, curating galleries or otherwise, but some of us are studying our degree just for our love of art.”
We feel such enthusiasm and enterprise should be rewarded so we want to encourage you to please come along on Sunday April 13th, seek out their stall, Art Bath Spa and buy something so they can show their work in the big city this Summer. They’ll be selling artwork, both original and prints plus other handmade trinkets all from students on their course in aid to fund our London Exhibition in July. And what are they looking forward to most about being back? Continues Elizabeth, “the atmosphere and bustle and talking to both the people who visit and the other vendors, who were very welcoming, kind and helpful at the March market!” We’re certainly looking forward to having them back too, especially if we snap up a future grand master in the process!
